East Haven’s Tolli’s Apizza poised to expand — to South Carolina

One of East Haven’s oldest and best pizzerias, Tolli’s Apizza at 410 Main St., is getting ready to open a second place later this year in a well-traveled, fast-growing shopping area of Johns Island, S.C., a barrier island just outside Charleston, S.C.

EAST HAVEN — You know that line you always hear about there being no decent pizza — let alone apizza — down South?

One of East Haven’s oldest and best pizzerias, Tolli’s Apizza at 410 Main St., is getting ready to open a second place later this year in a well-traveled, fast-growing shopping area of Johns Island, S.C., a barrier island just outside Charleston, S.C.

Some ex-East Haveners now living down there are salivating at the thought of Tolli’s coming to them later this year.

“Oh my Gosh, yes,” said Barbara Eule, who lives with her husband, Peter, for part of the year in Clinton and part of the year in the Charleston area. “First of all, my husband Peter — he’s 73 — has been eating there since he was a little boy.”

Eule, who spends at least six months of the year down in Charleston but was up in Clinton this past week babysitting her grandkids, said that when coming back up north they often stop at Tolli’s on the way back from the airport — even before they go home.

“We just love Tolli’s,” she said. “We’ve been going there for years. … We’re looking forward to them” opening in Charleston “and I think all of our friends are looking forward to it.”

How is this happening?

Tolli’s owner Anthony Paluso, said his wife, Giuseppina, and he have a great opportunity down there to expand Tolli’s business — not move the current restaurant, he emphasized — and bring great pizza to a new place.

“We are not closing. We are expanding,” Peluso said. “There are a lot of people down there from up here,” he said. He said they are hoping to open in Johns Island in August, but plan on moving down there a few months before that.
